As skincare fanatics, we love to read and learn timeless techniques as well as modern methodologies for keeping our skin healthy, but there are times when we read advice that makes us do a mental double-take. With the masses of free information on the interweb, one can become a little perplexed/overwhelmed/put-off (delete as appropriate) with all of the confusing and contradictory advice available – especially when it comes to beauty. The prevalence of social media has made it possible for practically anyone to position themselves as “beauty gurus” these days. On one hand this is great because it levels the playing field, allowing smaller specialists in the industry to have a voice and reach, but it also means that readers and consumers now have to be more selective about who they listen to and trust.

Over time, you can learn to refine your BS-detectors and filter through the noise to find true skincare sage advice. But, in the meantime, we thought it would be useful to debunk some of the most common skincare myths, so you don’t get bamboozled (like us!) when you’re looking for skincare solutions:

1)High SPF sunscreens offer the best protection

FALSE – The SPF rating on your sunscreen refers to the level of protection from UVB rays only – providing no guidance on UVA protection at all. Given that UVA accounts for 95% of all UV radiation reaching the Earth and is subsequently the main culprit behind photo aging – it is imperative that you use a broad spectrum sunscreen everyday, like the LJH UV True Sunscreen, SPF 47, PA+++, rather than a product with high SPF only.

2) Oily skin is less prone to wrinkles than dry skin

TRUE (maybe) – Finally some good news for oily skinned folk! Although the research on this isn’t definitive, it is intuitive that this would be the case given that oily skin tends to be thicker, providing better natural protection against sun damage. It has also been suggested that women with oily skin may have higher testosterone levels, which help protect against diminished collagen levels and subsequently wrinkles. That doesn’t mean that oily skin can’t look old. Lifestyle choices play a huge role in aging, so keeping the sun protection handy and ciggies at bay will certainly help.

3) Its best to use skincare products from the same brand in your daily routine

FALSE – This is just a marketing gimmick. There is no valid reason to just use one brand or even one skincare line for your entire routine. The only exception being if the products in a specific line have been tailored for a certain skincare need (e.g. acne), and the products have ingredients that build upon eachother to achieve the best solution for that need. If not, go wild and feel free to mix and match your favourite brands.

4) Junk food causes acne

FALSE – This one surprised us a little too. We always thought that junk food was the enemy of healthy skin, but apparently its not that simple. High GI foods – not all junk food – can trigger or worsen acne in acne-prone skin, because they raise blood sugar and insulin levels quickly, leading to inflammation. If you crave sweet things (don’t we all?), then dark chocolate is a better alternative to milk chocolate. Also, incorporating anti-inflammatory food into your diet such as oily fish and green tea can help ward off acne, so try swapping the BigMacs for some sushi.

5) The most expensive products are the most effective

FALSE – This may just be the most annoying myth of all. An unfounded rumour undoubtedly spread by marketers of overpriced beauty brands (rant over). You don’t need to pay extortionate prices to achieve healthy skin. Why is why we LOVE Korean skincare so darn much. All of our brands create well-research, well-formulated, effective skincare solutions that don’t break the bank. If you’re looking for affordable skincare that actually works, then you’ve come to the right place…

No K-beauty skincare regime is complete without an essence, ampoule or serum. These little gems allow you to tailor your skincare to your specific needs – making them an absolute must-have for anyone looking to improve the health of their skin (read: all of us!). Unfortunately, sometimes Western consumers can get confused or intimidated by the different terminology, which puts them off from trying – and ultimately benefiting from – these skincare saviours. To help you avoid this pitfall, we have put together a quick and easy guide to these skin essentials, so you have no excuse not to give them a go yourself 😉

Typically applied straight after your toner has been absorbed, essences (sometimes referred to as emulsions) are used to further hydrate your skin. Now, you may be thinking…does my skin really need to be hydrated again and so soon? Well, the answer is yes. Yes, yes, yes. Especially in drier conditions or at certain times of the year, your skin needs all the help it can get.

These lightweight formulas are also packed with plenty of active ingredients so that they nourish as well as hydrate your skin. Here are a few of our favourites:

Goodal Luminant Plus Whitening Essence

A transformational skin brightening essence that helps improve your complexion by targeting surface discolouration, uneven skintone, and dark spots. Formulated with 7 fermented super seed oils, this potent essence works to revitalise and recharge your skin

Formulated with 7 different super seeds and red yeast rice, it works to dramatically hydrate and nourish your skin, softening the appearance of fine lines and leaving you with naturally radiant, velvety-smooth skin.

Ampoules & Serums

Ampoules and serums are highly-enriched liquid concentrates that influence the skin at a cellular level and boost skin rejuvenation. They are lighter than a moisturiser, but thicker than a toner or essence and they typically have an oily consistency. Most ampoules or serums are targeted for specific skincare needs or concerns and are usually used for short periods of time, when your skin is most in need. Below are some of our favourites:

Mizon Night Repair Seruming Ampoule

Refresh, repair and rejuvenate your tired skin while you sleep! Mizon’s Night Repair Serum Ampoule is a cult favourite for all the right reasons. Wake up with hydrated, radiant, and smooth skin everyday.

Our customers always tell us how much they value the opportunity to learn more about the who, what, where and why of our favourite brands and products, as it makes them feel more comfortable with these emerging skincare trends. This is perfectly understandable when you’re entering uncharted skincare territory. Which is why we try our best to demystify some of these areas on our weekly blog posts, so that our customers can feel more confident to try new products and experience the skincare improvements that we ourselves have benefited from. Today, we have the latest in our series of Brand Spotlight posts – this time looking at everyone’s favourite sensitive-skincare brand, Klairs.

Klairs was established in 2010, with the mission to create a skincare range that is perfectly formulated for sensitive skin. An eco-friendly brand, Klairs cares deeply about what goes into their products, as such they use only the very best all-natural ingredients. None of their products are tested on animals, and all are free from parabens, alcohol and artificial colouring.

Why We Love Klairs

You could mistakenly think that because Klairs focus on natural ingredients, with gentle formulations that are free-from a lot of nasties, that they may not be very effective. Its actually quite the opposite. You see, the best thing about Klairs products in my opinion is that they aren’t just great on paper. They actually work. Each and every Klairs product has been tried and tested by our team, and we have been pleasantly surprised each time by how effective and versatile they are. We all have different skin types and concerns, and surprisingly Klairs products seem to work well for us all. Although these products are formulated for sensitive skin, they are perfectly suitable for those with dry, oily, combination or even mature skin. Their products may be simple but they’re very effective, which is what really counts in my books.
