Please welcome the newest member of The Silk Rose family…M-Line by Mizon! Created by our favourite skincare savants over at Mizon, the M-Line has been designed to focus specifically on hydration, which is especially important in these dry, Winter months (bleugh).

As skin-savvy readers such as yourselves will obviously know, hydration is the first step to healthy skin. Bold statement, I know, but I’m sticking with it. Not only does hydration unsurprisingly help to alleviate symptoms of dry skin but it also does the same for oily skin – yes, oily – as it targets the root cause of the symptoms you would often associate with these skin conditions. Moreover, hydrated skin is better equipped to absorb and accept any treatments that you apply to your skin, be it through essences, serums or masks. #needIsaymore

To help us on our journey to healthy skin, Mizon have kindly created these hydrating heroes that are an absolute must-have for your Winter skincare routine:

Designed to follow the prep-steps of your skincare routine (cleanse-exfoliate-tone), the Water Volume Ex First Essence has been specially formulated with snow algae extract, hydrasalinol, ceramide and moringa to deeply hydrate and soothe the skin, while creating a barrier that helps lock in moisture.

The Intensive Skin Barrier Eye Cream Pack has been created to help retain maximum moisture around the sensitive eye area – formulated with hyaluronic acid and ceramide, this eye cream deeply hydrates the skin and strengthens the skin barrier to retain the added moisture. The Water Volume Ex Cream does the same for the rest of the face; the deeply-hydrating gel cream has been specially formulated with Mizon M-Line’s Hydra ToX™, an original Mizon formula developed for the Water Volume EX Line, to improve the skin’s natural moisture barrier and enhance moisture retention.

The Enjoy Vital-Up sheet masks have been created to firm, nourish and deeply hydrate your skin in 20 minutes, while the Intensive Skin Barrier Eye Gel Mask has been designed to comfortably fit over the eyes and deliver its specially formulated hydrating serum to the delicate eye area.

And when your skin is in need of some serious TLC, you have the Enjoy Fresh On Time – Sweet Honey Mask, an indulgent wash-off mask that is generously formulated with honey to deeply hydrate the skin and add an extra layer of moisture to help combat the drying effects of the weather and environment.

Nobody likes having pore problems. Nobody. But, they are alas a fact of life for many oily-skinned folk and can sometimes even affect the more sebaceously blessed amongst us. But, what causes enlarged pores in the first place, and what can we do to battle this skin-demon?

As any KBeauty aficionada will tell you, sheet masks are the – not so secret – reason behind their dewy, flawless skin. But, now that sheet masks have become popular the world over, and are readily available, it’s often hard to distinguish between those that do the work and those that just look the part.

Have you ever been to a cosmetics store, eyeing-up the latest skincare must-haves when the sales assistant asks if you need some help, promptly followed by “what skin type are you?”. I used to reeeallly hate being asked that question. Depending on the time of year (and even the time of the month), my skin could be anywhere from dry as the Sahara to chipshop greasy. So I used to say the same thing – unconvincingly – everytime…“err, I think I have combination skin”. What a copout. But that little catch-all term made me feel like I’d covered all my bases. I wanted the sales assistant to direct me to that one magical potion that would solve all my skincare woes, no matter what condition my skin was in at the time.

If you’ve also noticed the recent revival of rose oil in skincare products but don’t really know what the fuss is all about – well, you’ve come to the right place. Because we LOVE, LOVE, LOVE rose oil and are very happy to enlighten you about its many benefits. For example, did you know that rose oil has been used for medicinal purposes in places like China, India, Assyria, Egypt, Greece and Rome for centuries, and has been shown to have a positive effect in treating depression (particularly in post-partem women)? But, rose oil isn’t just good for your mental and physical health – it works wonders on your skin too.

Everyone – and I mean everyone – understands the importance of moisturising one’s skin. No matter how much of a skincare newbie you may be, I’m sure you apply some sort of cream to your skin on a daily basis. Even the least skin-savvy amongst us have nailed down the basics of cleanse-tone-moisturise. But, there is a big difference between just getting the basics right and perfecting a routine that works for you.

At The Silk Rose, we are big proponents of tailoring your skincare to your personal needs – be that based on your specific skin type, skin goals or concerns. By choosing the right products for you, you will have a better chance at skincare success. Given that moisturisers are clearly a fundamental part of a healthy skincare routine, we thought it may be helpful to take a closer look and understand what makes a good moisturiser and more importantly – how to pick the right one for you.

We are so very excited to introduce you to the newest member of The Silk Rose family! Aromatica was established with a quest to be 100% pure, natural and safe, both for consumers and the environment. The founder’s passionate belief that beauty should be honest and natural, not synthetic, has been his inspiration since the beginning, over a decade ago. Aromatica’s dedicated sourcing of the best ingredients directly from local suppliers all over the world, and finest essential oils native to the source location, shows in the exceptional quality of their products. Aromatica’s products are manufactured in their ECOCERT certified facility and is the only Korean beauty brand to earn EWG’s Skin-deep Champion Status, an accolade awarded to toxin-free beauty brands.

Aromatica’s founder, Jerry Kim, discovered the importance of natural ingredients when he lived in Australia in 1997. He spent years studying the evidence relating to the detrimental effects of synthetic chemicals, particularly synthetic fragrances which are more toxic than paraben preservatives or synthetic surfactants, and found that many everyday skin and body care products contained these toxic ingredients. He initially started off importing and distributing natural raw materials to wholesalers, cosmetic manufacturers and personal care companies, but found these companies had hardly used natural organic raw materials and decided to extend his reach by manufacturing his own range of products. Aromatica was born because of the founder’s commitment to, and passion for organic, natural and safe ingredients. This is reflected in each and every one of their products, which is why we are so excited to bring the best of Aromatica to you, our lovely customers. Have a look through our thoughtfully hand-picked selection and take your first steps to healthier skin…

Nobody likes change. I certainly don’t. Especially when that change comes in the form of aging skin. But, unlike death and taxes, the youthfulness of your skin (or lack therefore) is not a foregone conclusion. Yes, we have to accept that the breakdown of collagen is just another part of the natural aging process, causing the skin to become crepey, dry and saggy, while fine lines and wrinkles may deepen. But, the extent of this is – atleast partly-  in our control. Of course, genetics play a role, and we are yet to defeat Mother Nature in this particular battle – but there are certain lifestyle and skincare choices we can make to keep our skin looking healthy and glowing no matter our age. Here are some of our top tips:

As skincare fanatics, we love to read and learn timeless techniques as well as modern methodologies for keeping our skin healthy, but there are times when we read advice that makes us do a mental double-take. With the masses of free information on the interweb, one can become a little perplexed/overwhelmed/put-off (delete as appropriate) with all of the confusing and contradictory advice available – especially when it comes to beauty. The prevalence of social media has made it possible for practically anyone to position themselves as “beauty gurus” these days. On one hand this is great because it levels the playing field, allowing smaller specialists in the industry to have a voice and reach, but it also means that readers and consumers now have to be more selective about who they listen to and trust.

Over time, you can learn to refine your BS-detectors and filter through the noise to find true skincare sage advice. But, in the meantime, we thought it would be useful to debunk some of the most common skincare myths, so you don’t get bamboozled (like us!) when you’re looking for skincare solutions:

1)High SPF sunscreens offer the best protection

FALSE – The SPF rating on your sunscreen refers to the level of protection from UVB rays only – providing no guidance on UVA protection at all. Given that UVA accounts for 95% of all UV radiation reaching the Earth and is subsequently the main culprit behind photo aging – it is imperative that you use a broad spectrum sunscreen everyday, like the LJH UV True Sunscreen, SPF 47, PA+++, rather than a product with high SPF only.

2) Oily skin is less prone to wrinkles than dry skin

TRUE (maybe) – Finally some good news for oily skinned folk! Although the research on this isn’t definitive, it is intuitive that this would be the case given that oily skin tends to be thicker, providing better natural protection against sun damage. It has also been suggested that women with oily skin may have higher testosterone levels, which help protect against diminished collagen levels and subsequently wrinkles. That doesn’t mean that oily skin can’t look old. Lifestyle choices play a huge role in aging, so keeping the sun protection handy and ciggies at bay will certainly help.

3) Its best to use skincare products from the same brand in your daily routine

FALSE – This is just a marketing gimmick. There is no valid reason to just use one brand or even one skincare line for your entire routine. The only exception being if the products in a specific line have been tailored for a certain skincare need (e.g. acne), and the products have ingredients that build upon eachother to achieve the best solution for that need. If not, go wild and feel free to mix and match your favourite brands.

4) Junk food causes acne

FALSE – This one surprised us a little too. We always thought that junk food was the enemy of healthy skin, but apparently its not that simple. High GI foods – not all junk food – can trigger or worsen acne in acne-prone skin, because they raise blood sugar and insulin levels quickly, leading to inflammation. If you crave sweet things (don’t we all?), then dark chocolate is a better alternative to milk chocolate. Also, incorporating anti-inflammatory food into your diet such as oily fish and green tea can help ward off acne, so try swapping the BigMacs for some sushi.

5) The most expensive products are the most effective

FALSE – This may just be the most annoying myth of all. An unfounded rumour undoubtedly spread by marketers of overpriced beauty brands (rant over). You don’t need to pay extortionate prices to achieve healthy skin. Why is why we LOVE Korean skincare so darn much. All of our brands create well-research, well-formulated, effective skincare solutions that don’t break the bank. If you’re looking for affordable skincare that actually works, then you’ve come to the right place…
