Have you ever been to a cosmetics store, eyeing-up the latest skincare must-haves when the sales assistant asks if you need some help, promptly followed by “what skin type are you?”. I used to reeeallly hate being asked that question. Depending on the time of year (and even the time of the month), my skin could be anywhere from dry as the Sahara to chipshop greasy. So I used to say the same thing – unconvincingly – everytime…“err, I think I have combination skin”. What a copout. But that little catch-all term made me feel like I’d covered all my bases. I wanted the sales assistant to direct me to that one magical potion that would solve all my skincare woes, no matter what condition my skin was in at the time.
Nobody likes change. I certainly don’t. Especially when that change comes in the form of aging skin. But, unlike death and taxes, the youthfulness of your skin (or lack therefore) is not a foregone conclusion. Yes, we have to accept that the breakdown of collagen is just another part of the natural aging process, causing the skin to become crepey, dry and saggy, while fine lines and wrinkles may deepen. But, the extent of this is – atleast partly- in our control. Of course, genetics play a role, and we are yet to defeat Mother Nature in this particular battle – but there are certain lifestyle and skincare choices we can make to keep our skin looking healthy and glowing no matter our age. Here are some of our top tips:
Itchiness, blotchiness, redness, tingliness. These are some of the most common symptoms of sensitive skin, touted by skincare gurus. But, there are others which are often overlooked, such as discomfort, helplessness and my personal favourite, frustration-bordering-on-rage. So, what exactly is the cause of all this unpleasantness?
I have dry skin, and it is literally the bane of my existence. I know it sounds like I have irrationally strong feelings about my skin type, but it’s the truth, so there. Only fellow dry-skinned folk can understand that uncomfortable tight, parched feeling first thing in the morning. Or how plane travel can make you feel like your skin is cracking. Not fun.
So, you know you have oily skin (it’s glowingly obvious). You thought you had your skin routine down – every morning you prep your face step-by-step and begin the day feeling as fresh as a daisy. An hour or two later however, you feel like enough oil has seeped through your face to fry an egg. The most frustrating thing is you could have had a lie in got to work early instead. No matter how you spend your morning – the end result would still be a greasy face by lunchtime *sigh*
If this daily struggle sounds familiar, and you want to know how to end your oily-skin woes, read on…
I like to think that the Ancient Greek aphorism “Know Thyself” was actually the brainchild of a skin-savvy toga-wearing Greek goddess of some sort. Either that or Plato had some divine skincare wisdom that he was trying to share with the world…but we weren’t quite ready to understand.
Knowledge is power – which is why we at The Silk Rose are carrying the torch of skincare wisdom to help guide you on your journey to beautiful skin. Through our “Know Thy Skin” series, we hope to inform, enlighten and hopefully lead you to make better choices for your skin.
